What is a spray tan?

Spray tanning is a quick easy way to achieve a beautiful natural looking, healthy glow without subjecting your delicate skin to harmful UV rays.

The active tanning ingredient in tanning solutions is called Dihydroxyacetone (DHA).  DHA is derived from sugar cane.  When it is applied to the skin, it reacts with the amino acids on the skin's surface causing the outer layer of your skin to change colour.

When having a spray tan, tanning solution is applied by spraying a fine mist of the solution over your body.  The application of tanning solution takes approximately 5-10 minutes.  The solution is then left to dry, before rinsing off the solution in the shower.  Your technician will advise how long you should leave the solution on to dry, before rinsing, as this will depend on which tanning product you have chosen.

Unlike exposing your skin to the sun, or a solarium, spray tanning will not cause your skin to age prematurely, or increase the risk of skin cancer.  Spray tans are also a quick and easy solution to achieving a beautiful natural looking tan.

Can I shave before my spray tan?

For best results, hair removal such as shaving or waxing should be done the day before your tan, to ensure your skin's pores have had time to close.  This will avoid tiny spots occurring.

How long will my spray tan appointment take?

If you come to me, your appointment should not take any longer than 15 - 20 minutes.  if you have booked a mobile service, your appointment should take no longer than 20 - 30 minutes, from the time your Technician arrives, to the time they leave.  This time will be longer if there is more than one person.

Feel free to wear as little or as much as you feel comfortable wearing, however we strongly recommend for health reasons that clients wear underpants or a g-string. Your spray tan Technician will also offer protective eyewear, nasal filters/face masks and disposable underwear as standard safety practice. Please refer to tanning tips for more information.

How long should I wait before showering, swimming or exercising?

This will depend on what tanning product was used.  Natural Look Spray Tans have a number of options available, which finish processing any where between 2 hours and 8 hours after your spray tan.  Your spray tan Technician will advise you how long you should wait before showering, swimming or exercising.  Swimming and exercise will ultimately reduce the life of your spray tan.

You may notice colour washes off when rinsing.  This is perfectly normal as it is only bronzer and not the actual active ingredient that colours yours skin.  Your tan will continue to develop over 24 hours after your spray tan was applied

Will I turn orange?

No.  Spray tans only turn orange if cheap inferior tanning products are used, or from applying too much spray tan solution.  Natural Look Spray Tans only uses quality products, and Technicians are fully trained, to ensure provide you with a beautiful natural looking spray tan.

How long will my spray tan last?

Spray tans last anywhere from  5 - 10 days depending on each individual and how quickly their skin sheds and rejuvenates itself.  This is due to the fact that the active ingredient in spray tan solutions reacts with the outer layer of your skin cells causing them to change colour.  As these skin cells shed from your body, so will your tan.

The Cancer Council recommends in their Position Statement for Fake Tans and UV Radiation, published in 2007, that people who have a strong desire to change their skin colour would be safer using a fake tanning product in preference to UV radiation from direct sunlight and solariums. (For further information visit www.cancer.org.au).

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), approves DHA for external use, however advises that measures should be taken to protect the eyes, lips and mucous membranes, and to prevent inadvertent ingestion and/or inhalation of DHA-containing products.

Natural Look Spray Tans recommends clients wear the following to prevent inadvertent ingestion and inhalation of tanning solution during your spray tan:

  1. Protective eyewear.

  2. Nasal filter.

  3. Lip Balm.

  4. Underwear.

What will happen once my spray tan Technician arrives?

  • Upon arrival your Technician will discuss with you the most suitable area to set up the equipment and apply the spray tan.   All that is required is access to a power point, and enough room for the tanning tent and equipment (approx 2 square metres).  The more light that is in the room the better.

  • You will be asked to complete our Customer Care form whilst your Technician sets up their equipment.

  • Your technician will then discuss your requirements, what to expect and help determine which tanning solution would be best suited.

  • To apply the tan, a fine mist is sprayed over your body.

  • Once the tanning solution has been applied, the tanning machine is adapted into a dryer whereby you will be able to take some time to dry yourself off.

  • Your technician will then pack away the tanning equipment and be on their way.
